The tokay gecko is a large nocturnal gecko native to the rainforests and human dwellings of Southeast Asia, and is one of the largest gecko species in the world, with adults reaching lengths of over 30 centimetres. The species takes its common name from the loud distinctive call of the male, a repeated to-kay sound that carries clearly through the night. Tokay geckos are visually striking, with a blue-grey base colour patterned with orange and red spots, and they are known for an assertive temperament and a powerful bite that they readily deliver when handled.
