The Swedish Vallhund is an ancient spitz-type herding dog native to Sweden with a history believed to extend at least one thousand years, and possibly much longer, given the similarity of the type to dogs depicted in Viking-age artefacts. The breed is closely related to Welsh Corgis in morphology - both are long-bodied, short-legged herding dogs of similar build - and the genetic relationship has led to debate about whether Viking traders introduced the Vallhund to Wales or whether Welsh Corgis were brought to Scandinavia. The Vallhund was used to herd cattle, sheep, and pigs on Swedish farms, driving livestock with nips at the heels from below the level of kicks. The breed nearly became extinct in the 1940s when it was rediscovered and preserved by Bjorn von Rosen. The Swedish Vallhund was officially recognised by the Swedish Kennel Club in 1943.
