The Pumi is a Hungarian herding terrier-type dog that developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries through crossing of the older Hungarian Puli herding dog with terrier and spitz-type breeds brought to Hungary from Germany and France. The result is a lively, energetic herding dog with a curly to wavy coat, a distinctive tilted head posture and semi-erect ears that fold forward at the tip, giving the breed a characteristically alert and inquisitive expression. The Pumi was used extensively for herding sheep and cattle on the Hungarian puszta, and its terrier influence gives it more vocal intensity and drive than the older, calmer Puli. The breed was formalised as distinct from the Puli in 1921 when the Hungarian Kennel Club established separate breed standards. Pumik - the plural of Pumi - have achieved recognition by major kennel clubs internationally relatively recently, entering the American Kennel Club's herding group in 2016.
