The Plott Hound is one of the great native American hound breeds, developed in the rugged mountains of western North Carolina in the eighteenth century by Johannes Plott and his descendants, who brought their German hunting dog ancestors to the New World in 1750 and gradually developed them over generations into the modern Plott Hound. The Plott Hound is the only American hound breed not descended from English foxhound stock, making the breed unique in American canine history. The Plott Hound was bred above all for one demanding job - hunting wild boar and black bear through the steep mountain forests of the southern Appalachians, work that called for a hound with great courage, exceptional stamina, a keen nose, and a notably tenacious tracking style. The breed has a smooth coat usually in a brindle pattern with black saddle, dark expressive eyes, and a powerful athletic build. The Plott Hound is the state dog of North Carolina.
