Pliosaurus was an enormous marine reptile that swam in the warm shallow seas of what is now Europe and South America during the Late Jurassic period, roughly one hundred and fifty million years ago. Despite its inclusion in many dinosaur books, Pliosaurus was in fact not a dinosaur - it was a pliosaur, a remarkable family of large marine reptiles closely related to the long-necked plesiosaurs but with a much shorter neck and a much larger head. The largest Pliosaurus species reached lengths of well over forty feet, with a massive crocodile-shaped head lined with teeth larger than those of Tyrannosaurus rex - some Pliosaurus teeth exceed twelve inches in length. The species had four powerful paddle-shaped flippers that drove the animal through the water in a flying motion not unlike that of a sea turtle, but at far greater speed and scale.
