Pelicans are large waterbirds found on every continent except Antarctica, with a distinctive elongated bill and expandable throat pouch used to scoop fish from the water surface. The pouch holds up to three times the volume of the stomach and drains before the catch is swallowed. The largest species, the Dalmatian pelican, has a wingspan reaching over three metres. Brown pelicans - the only primarily marine pelican - dive from heights of up to ten metres to catch fish below the surface, a hunting method unusual among pelicans. They are colonial nesters, long-lived, and capable of remarkable gliding efficiency over water using ground effect aerodynamics.
