Kronosaurus was a large marine reptile that lived approximately 125 to 99 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous, classified within the pliosaurid lineage of plesiosaurs - a group of marine reptiles unrelated to dinosaurs despite popular misclassification. Kronosaurus is named for the Titan Cronus from Greek mythology and was one of the largest pliosaurs, with body length estimates ranging from 9 to 11 metres based on the most complete known specimens. The genus has a complex reconstruction history - the most famous mounted Kronosaurus specimen at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology was reconstructed in the 1950s with what is now considered an overly long body and inaccurate vertebral count. Kronosaurus was an apex predator of Cretaceous seas, taking prey including fish, cephalopods, sea turtles, and possibly other marine reptiles.
