The Kooikerhondje is a small Dutch sporting spaniel breed whose name translates approximately as small cager dog, referring to its historical role in eendenkooi duck decoy trapping systems used in the Netherlands from the seventeenth century onward. In a duck kooi, a waterway leading to a concealed cage was worked by the Kooikerhondje, which would be trained to appear briefly along the bank, attracting the curiosity of wild ducks and drawing them up the narrowing channel until they entered the cage trap. The dog's white-tipped tail waving above the reeds, called tolling, was the key behavioural element of the system.
