Kestrels are unmistakable - small, slim, elegant falcons with pointed wings and long tails, the male American Kestrel particularly striking with his rusty back, blue-grey wings, two bold black slashes on a white face, and a small dark cap. Kestrels are famous for one remarkable hunting behaviour - the species can hover almost perfectly still in mid-air, beating its wings rapidly while keeping its head and eyes locked on a single point on the ground below. This famous wind-hovering allows the Kestrel to scan for small prey such as mice, voles, lizards, and large insects from a height, then dive sharply onto its target.
