Iguanodon was one of the most historically important of all dinosaurs - the second dinosaur ever formally named to science, with the first fossils discovered in southern England in 1822 and named by Gideon Mantell in 1825. The name Iguanodon, meaning iguana tooth, was given because the teeth of the species closely resembled the teeth of modern iguanas. Iguanodon lived during the Early Cretaceous period, roughly one hundred and twenty-five million years ago, across what is now Europe. The species was a large plant-eating dinosaur reaching lengths of around thirty-five feet, and it is most famous for one striking anatomical feature - the large conical thumb spike on each hand. This spike was originally placed on the dinosaur's nose by early reconstructors, but later finds correctly placed it on the thumb.
