The Ferruginous Hawk is the largest of all the hawks of North America, native to the open prairies, sagebrush plains, and dry grasslands of the western United States and parts of southwestern Canada. The species takes its name from the Latin ferrugo, meaning rust, after the famous rusty-red colour on the legs, shoulders, and back of the light-morph adult. The Ferruginous Hawk is unmistakable - a tall, broad-winged, heavy-bodied hawk with a large pale head, a deep chest, the distinctive rusty markings, and notably feathered legs that distinguish the species from most other hawks (only a small handful of hawks have feathers extending down to the toes).
