With this picture book we want to help preschool children whose parent, or another family member, is an oncology patient. The picture book, which was made in collaboration with professionals, leads a child, in a playful way, through the stages of treatment of a person who they hold dear. In a manner adapted for children, we describe situations ranging from hair loss and other side effects of chemotherapy to the possible hospitalization of a family member. The picture book is written in the form of a dialogue between a little girl, Lota, and her older brother Vili who explains their mother’s illness and prepares her for what they will go through as a family. The story is accompanied by spirited illustrations in children’s style, in an effort to bring this difficult topic closer to the youngest ones. Our picture book is conceived as help for the whole family: kids who are going through possibly the most difficult moments of a childhood, and adults as well. Parents often don’t know how to talk to their children about the serious situation that they found themselves in. Children’s psychologists agree that the illness shouldn’t be hidden from the children. The picture book thus removes the taboo from a serious, heavy topic. It removes the veil of secrecy from it and initiates a conversation in a language that children can understand. The conclusion that every child will reach is that cancer is something that happens, that there exist ways to treat it, that those ways of treatment have certain side effects and that, most importantly, a family should stick together through difficult times. Throughout the story, a child’s role in the healing process is emphasised and a child is put from a passive position of powerlessness into an active and more important role of someone who is helping. Cancer thus becomes what it already is, a difficult disease for which no one is to blame, a disease that is not happening to someone else, but also a disease that brings a family together as the most important place for the patient, with love being the most important treatment.
