Ceratosaurus was a large theropod dinosaur that lived approximately 153 to 148 million years ago during the Late Jurassic, contemporary with Allosaurus and other theropods of the Morrison Formation in western North America. Ceratosaurus is distinguished by a prominent nasal horn and a pair of smaller horns above the eyes - features that gave the genus its name (horned lizard). Recent biomechanical analyses indicate Ceratosaurus reached approximately 6 to 7 metres in length and was lighter than the contemporary Allosaurus, with a more flexible spine and unusually well-developed teeth even in the front of the jaw - a dental configuration that suggests Ceratosaurus may have specialised in different prey than other Morrison theropods. The species had an unusual ridge of small dermal osteoderms (skin-embedded bony scutes) running along the back, providing a documented case of bony skin armour in a theropod.
