The Briard is one of the most beautiful and ancient of all French herding dog breeds, native to France for many centuries, where the breed was developed as a herding and guarding dog for the flocks and farms of the Brie region. The Briard is documented in French illuminated tapestries from the eighth century, making the breed one of the oldest French dogs. The breed served extensively with the French army during both world wars as a messenger, sentry, and ambulance dog. The Briard is unmistakable - a tall, well-muscled, athletic herding dog with a famous long, slightly wavy, double coat in solid colours of black, tawny, grey, or fawn, often with darker shading. The coat falls over the eyes in a famous beard and moustache that has given the Briard the affectionate description of a heart wrapped in fur. Like several other French herding breeds, the Briard has double dewclaws on the rear legs. The temperament is intelligent, devoted, and famously protective.
