Slugs are gastropod molluscs that have lost or reduced the external shell present in their snail ancestors, with the shell either absent entirely, internal and vestigial, or reduced to a small mantle plate depending on the species. Slugs include both terrestrial species that occupy most temperate and tropical habitats with sufficient moisture, and marine sea slugs that have radiated into some of the most visually spectacular forms in the molluscan world. Terrestrial slugs are ecologically important detritivores that decompose plant material and contribute to soil formation, and they are essential prey items for hedgehogs, ground beetles, frogs, and many other small carnivores.
