The Australian Mist is the first cat breed developed in Australia, created by Dr. Truda Straede in Sydney starting in 1977 through a selective breeding programme combining the Burmese, Abyssinian, and domestic shorthair. The goal was to produce an indoor companion cat with a spotted or marbled coat pattern, a tolerant temperament suitable for families with children, and reduced desire to roam compared to other breeds. The coat pattern was achieved through the Abyssinian ticking gene combined with the Burmese solid colouring and domestic tabby markings, producing the misted background that gives the breed its name. The Australian Mist was originally called the Spotted Mist until marbled coat cats were included in the standard in 1998.
