Alioramus was a tyrannosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived approximately 70 to 66 million years ago in what is now Mongolia, distinguished from larger contemporary tyrannosaurids by smaller body size, more gracile build, and a series of small bony horns along the top and sides of the snout - the most extensively horned snout known among any tyrannosaurid. Alioramus reached approximately 5 to 6 metres in length, making it substantially smaller than Tarbosaurus, the larger contemporary Asian tyrannosaurid that shared its environment. Recent palaeontological analysis suggests Alioramus and Tarbosaurus may have occupied different ecological niches within the same Mongolian ecosystem, with Alioramus likely specialising in smaller faster prey than the larger species could effectively hunt. The Alioramus genus was first described in 1976 from Mongolian Late Cretaceous deposits. The horned snout is the most distinctive Alioramus feature in popular palaeontology.
